Frequently Asked Questions
We believe informed travellers make better experiences. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about sailing with Mandrake, including our eco-tourism approach, daily life onboard, and what to expect during your Whitsundays adventure.
-
Mandrake is a certified eco-focused sailing experience designed to actively contribute to reef protection — not just minimise impact.
Our crew are trained through the Eye on the Reef program, and every trip includes a hands-on reef monitoring component where guests can participate in real conservation data collection for the Great Barrier Reef.
This isn’t passive eco-tourism, it’s meaningful involvement.
-
Eye on the Reef is a reef monitoring initiative run in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
During snorkelling sessions, guests can learn how to identify coral health indicators and marine species, and help log sightings such as turtles, rays, reef fish and coral condition. These observations contribute to long-term reef monitoring and protection efforts.
Participation is optional, relaxed, and guided by our trained crew.
-
Not at all.
Everything is explained in a simple, approachable way — no prior knowledge needed. You can be as involved as you like, or simply listen and enjoy the experience.
Likewise, sailing participation is optional. You’re welcome to help hoist sails and learn the basics, or just sit back and relax.
-

🌿 Our Eco Commitment
Mandrake is built on the belief that the best way to explore the Whitsundays is slowly, respectfully, and with intention.
We operate small-group sailing experiences to reduce pressure on fragile reef and island environments, using sail power wherever possible and adjusting routes daily to protect sensitive areas. Our crew are trained through the Eye on the Reefprogram, allowing guests to take part in guided reef observation activities that contribute to real conservation data for the Great Barrier Reef.
Eco-tourism on Mandrake isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about creating meaningful experiences that deepen understanding, inspire care, and leave the reef better protected for the future.
